Jacky Ickx
Jacky Ickx was born in Bruxelles (Belgium) on 1st January 1945 and is the undoubted champion of Belgium in Car Racing.
He started his career in car racing in 1963 in a BMW 700. By 1967, he became the European Formula 2 Champion. Then he commenced racing in Formula One. He won 8 Formula One Grand Prix : France in 1968, Germany and Canada in 1969, Austria, Canada and Mexico in 1970, Holland in 1971 and finally Germany in 1972. This feat has yet to be bettered by any other Belgian driver. He left the Formula One in 1979, after having been twice World vice-Champion of Drivers, in 1969 and in 1970.
His victories in endurance racing is even more impressive. Two World Championship titles, in 1982 and 1983. Six victories at the French classic, the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1969, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1981 and 1982. And these are just a few of his victories. In the ’80s, he participated in the African safari rallies. His best result was a victory in the 1983 Paris-Dakar rally.
Between 1967 and 1979, Jacky Ickx was 11 times winner of the Belgium Drivers Championship. He recieved, in 1968, the national trophy of the sport’s award.
